Finding A Puppy

Begin the Search

Is the Bouvier the right dog for you? There is a lot to learn about this highly intelligent and willful breed. They have significant coat requirements. They have low dander, but are not hypoallergenic. They are loyal and love children. They have lots of prey drive and love to chase moving things (and critters). They do not understand their size and often they could care less about where their paws land. It is a breed with a sense of humor, a love of children, devotion to family and protective to a fault.

Health Issues. The Bouvier is a relatively healthy breed but like all dogs health issues exist. Careful breeding practices and health testing can avoid many of these but no breeder has a crystal ball. As a future owner, you want your puppy to live a long and healthy life. Consider reviewing the Bouvier Health Foundation website and take note of both our ongoing health studies as well as the survey of issues affecting the breed.

Puppy or Adult? The energy of a puppy can be overwhelming and Bouvier puppies live up to this! Do you have the time to raise, train and socialize a puppy? This is most important with any herding breed. Perhaps an adult dog will be better for your home. Take the time to consider this alternative. There are lovely dogs who can be located through the American Bouvier Rescue League. The League is dedicated to finding responsible and loving homes for misplaced, neglected and unwanted Bouviers

About Breeders

Interview your breeder as your breeder interviews you! You are both responsible to gather a great deal of information.

The breeder should strive to achieve the highest quality in each and every breeding relative to the breed standard for conformation, health and temperament.

The breeder should be knowledgeable about genetic diseases including hip and elbow dysplasia, glaucoma and other eye disorders and the heart problem of sub-aortic stenosis.

The breeder should apply the same high standards to their bitches and stud dogs.

The breeder should use only physically sound, mature dogs of stable temperament for breeding. These characteristics are rarely, if ever, determined before the age of two.

The breeder should match each puppy’s personality with the compatible family.

The puppy should be examined by a licensed veterinarian for general health before placement. It should have age-appropriate vaccinations and be wormed.

Spay/Neuter contracts or limited registrations should be provided for companion puppies.

The breeder should sell show/breeding prospects only to knowledgeable, ethical and experienced people who are willing to help educate novices.

The breeder should accept the return of any puppy produced and/or help with the placement of that puppy.

The breeder should never sell, donate or surrender any Bouvier to a pet shop, wholesale dealer, Humane Society or laboratory.

They should be certain that each puppy will be provided appropriate shelter, health care and confinement by the buyer before placement..

The breeder should encourage buyers to attend puppy obedience classes to make it a good canine citizen.

The breeder should be a signatory of the ABdFC Code of Ethics.

Where to find a Bouvier puppy

Buying a Bouvier puppy should take time and never be an impulse decision. Review the AKC breed standard and how a quality Bouvier should be built. Be certain the conformation and the temperament on the sire and dam cannot be faulted. Their health records should be available in print or online at the OFA Website. Visit dog shows and performance events and interview Bouvier owners, meeting their dogs to gather more information. A well-bred dog is exceptional in conformation, health and temperament. Your breeder should strive to preserve the breed.

Remember that our rescue partner is the American Bouvier Rescue League if a puppy is not for you!
